Youth Services Librarian

Reports to: Head of Youth Services
Position Available: Immediately

Summary: Under the direction of the Head of Youth Services, the Youth Services Librarian develops programs, services and collections focusing on the importance of reading, storytelling, and the library as a learning resource. Presents and leads a variety of programs, services and activities for young people including babies, children and their caregivers, teachers and adults who work with them. Provides reference and readers’ advisory services utilizing print, A/V and electronic resources. Provides back up support to other departments as needed. Works with staff throughout the library to develop and implement programming, partnerships and other projects that enhance the library’s image in the community.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • 1-2 years of library youth services or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature and media-both current and classic.
  • Successful experience presenting developmentally appropriate programs for young people.
  • Eligibility for Michigan Librarian Professional Certificate.

Maintenance Assistant I


Posting Date: February 13, 2020
Closing Date: Open until filled
Reports to: Library Director
Position Available: Immediately

Summary: Under supervision, performs cleanup and routine maintenance of the library building and grounds to ensure the comfortable, clean, convenient, and safe operation of the library for both its patrons and staff. Performs year round upkeep of library grounds through picking up trash, cutting grass, raking, pickup of litter, shoveling of snow, salting of parking lots/sidewalks, and care of shrubbery and plantings.

Experience:

  • This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three years of facilities/maintenance experience in a related building.
  • Possession of a Michigan motor vehicle operator’s license.

Schedule: 25 hours per week, primarily on mornings, nights and weekends. Occasionally will be required to work a day shift during the week.
Union: Westland Library Union SEIU Local 517M (Non-Supervisory)
Salary: Starts at $17.50 per hour
Benefits: Prorated vacation leave, personal leave and paid holidays for employees working 20 or more hours per week. Employer provided contribution to retirement (401a) after meeting service requirements.

Technology Aide


Posting Date: February 10, 2020

Reports to: Head of Information Services
Position Available: Immediately

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor and/or other library staff, the Technology Aide provides assistance to patrons with using library computers and other technologies, and troubleshoots issues with printing, word processing, scanning, faxing, emailing, web browsing, wireless access, mobile devices, etc. Works with staff throughout the library on projects that enhance the library’s image in the community.

Experience:

  • This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 1-2 years library experience preferred.

Schedule: 25 hours per week. Flexible schedule to include days, nights, and weekends.
Union: Westland Library Union SEIU Local 517M (Non-Supervisory)
Salary: Starts at $11.00 per hour
Benefits: Prorated vacation leave, personal leave and paid holidays for employees working 20 or more hours per week. Employer provided contribution to retirement (401a) after meeting service requirements.
