Mr. Muo's Travelling Couch
Dai Sijie

This book was translated from French.

Fresh from years of studying in France, Mr. Muo, returns to China to lay claim to being the county’s first psychoanalyst. With a deep and profound respect for Freud and his teachings, Mr. Muo travels on his bicycle throughout the city, with a bright orange flag flying high above his head, announcing that the Interpreter of Dreams is open for business. Heavy on his mind, however, is a desire to find his first true love, Volcano of the Old Moon, whom he met while in school as a young boy. When Mr. Muo learns that Volcano of the Old Moon, a wife and photographer,  has been imprisoned for passing pictures she took of tortured prisoners to Western journalists, he takes up the challenge of securing her release.     Mr. Muo's  worst fears are realized when  he is told that the despised Judge Di is the only one who can reverse the sentence and free Volcano of the Old Moon. Discovering that Judge Di has an insatiable thirst for only two things, mahjong and virgins, Mr. Muo attempts to find the latter in hopes of securing freedom for his love. This fast paced story provides insight and humor as it paints a colorful picture of China in the 21st century, along with an interesting twist on dreams and their meanings. If you enjoyed Dai’s depiction of life in China you may also enjoy his previous book, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress: A Novel.

Devil's Alphabet
Daryl Gregory

Paxton Martin discovers corruption, conspiracy, and murder in his infamous hometown of Switchcreek, Tenn., after he relunctantly returns for a close friend's funeral. The retrovirus killed most of Switchcreek's population when Paxton was a kid; those who survived it were mutated into one of three creatures: towering argos, expressionless betas, and humongously obese charlies. Paxton was one of the few to come out unchanged. Now that he is caught up in the mystery of his best friend's death, he will attempt to discover the retrovirus's origin and if it could strike again.

Devil's Alphabet, which I believe refers to a person's DNA, is over the top at times: the conflict between certain characters is forced, leading to overly dramatic and unrealistic dialogue.  But the concept and plot are so original that I couldn't help being engrossed in this novel.

Never Let Me Go
Kazuo Ishiguro

All students at Hailsham meet a grim fate: Once they reach a certain age, they must donate their vital organs to those in need. In essence, they are harvested. Never Let Me Go is the story of three Hailsham students- Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy. Narrated by Kathy, the novel takes us through their childhood and eventual release from Hailsham (to lead normal lives until their donations begin).

Ishiguro doesn't hit you over the head with his anti-cloning, fear for the future theme; rather, he presents you with Kath's haunting story and lets you feel how you feel. I really enjoyed reading this novel and felt invested in what happened to its characters.

If you enjoy Never Let Me Go, be sure to check out the movie! The book was recently made into a film starring Carey Mulligan as Kathy and Keira Knightly as Ruth.

Faithful Place
Tana French

If you're familiar with Tana French's other works (In the Woods, The Likeness), you may recognize the protagonist, investigator Frank Mackey.  Try as he might, he cannot quite manage to break free of his hometown of Dublin, Ireland, where his parents and siblings still live in the neighborhood of Faithful Place. Mackey is summoned back to Faithful Place when a twenty year old mystery of the disappearance of his teenage sweetheart Rosie Daly resurfaces, opening old wounds, feuds, and plenty of family dysfunction and suspense.

As in her other literary mysteries, French's writing is quality; dialogue is only occasionally difficult to follow with its Irish slang. Recommended for those who enjoyed Stieg Larsson's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning
Darkfever

This urban fantasy is the first in a five title series (the last one is due out in January 2011). The world of MacKayla Lane, a Southern girl whose favorite things are tanning and the color pink, gets turned upside down when her sister Alina gets brutally murdered while studying abroad in Ireland. After receiving a cryptic message from her sister sent hours before her death and with the Dublin police unable to explain what happened to her, MacKayla decides to go to there herself in search of answers. While wandering the streets of Dublin, she ends up just finding more questions as she realizes that she can see ghastly creatures posing as human beings that everyone else appears to think look perfectly normal. The only person who can explain what she is seeing is an extremely mysterious and morally ambiguous bookshop owner named Jericho Barrons. Moning spins a rich tapestry of characters and delicious plot twists as MacKayla tries to solve her sister’s crime and understand the dangerous world of the Fae. Sorry romance fans, there isn’t any in here but there is plenty of tension and great banter. Also be prepared for a cliffhanger which will send you in search of the second book: Bloodfever.
