Toys for Tots

Our Teen Advisory Board is collecting toys from Nov. 30th- Dec. 20th for the Toys for Tots Foundation. The Toys for Tots Foundation donates Christmas toys to children in need, and it is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

If you'd like to make a donation, please bring new, unwrapped toys to the library between now and Dec. 20th. Donation boxes are located near the Reception Desk and the Reference Desk.

To-Go Cup Cozy Craft for Teens

Teens (Gr. 6-12). We're making hot beverage cozies or sleeves on Thursday, Dec. 15th at 6pm. They are perfect to place over your to-go cup to protect your hands from heat. They also make great gifts for any coffee drinker you know! Please sign up online here if you'd like to attend, or call the Reference Desk.

Some sewing experience will be helpful with this craft.

Candy Cane Critters

Teens! Make mice and reindeer ornaments out of leftover candy canes. Join us on Wednesday, December 21st at 7pm to make this simple holiday craft. Candy canes, hot chocolate, and holiday music will be provided. Sign up online here or by calling the Reference Desk. Grades 4-12 please.

Thanksgiving Hours

For the Thanksgiving holiday, the library will close at 5 pm on Wednesday, November 23.  The library will be closed Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25.  We will be back to normal hours on Saturday, November 26 (9 am-5 pm).  We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

Homelessness Awareness Month: Daily Bread Exhibit

For the next two weeks, the library is pleased to be hosting photos by Lad Strayer in honor of Homelessness Awareness Month. Mr. Strayer took the photos as part of a story about homelessness in Lenawee County, written by Jennifer Burd. Ms. Burd was moved to write poems about her experiences after the story was published and sought out Mr. Strayer to take additional photos. The result was the book, Daily Bread. On Tuesday, November 29th, Ms. Burd will be here to read from her book and also discuss issues and common misconceptions with homelessness. Anyone who has written a poem about homelessness or written a response to Mr. Strayer's photos is asked to read them at the event. Non-perishable food donations will also be collected at the reading.

Free movie for veterans - Glenn Anderson to co-host

The Library will be closed on Friday, but vetarans looking for something to do can view a free movie hosted by State Senator Anderson at the Livonia AMC 20. The Senator will be showing Defiance, starring Daniel Craig, at 3:00pm on Friday, November 11.

In order to qualify for tickets (limit 2 per veteran), veterans must live in Livonia, Westland, Garden City, or Redford Township. Tickets are limited, so RSVP to Anderson's office at 866-262-7306 or at mmakarewicz@senate.mi.gov as soon as possible.

Kindergarten Book Club--A Ribbiting Time

 Kindergarteners! Hop into the library and listen to frog stories for a ribbiting good time. Don’t let the frogs hop away in a race of the frogs and craft your very own green mean hoppin’ amphibian!

We're turning 15!!!

... and we want to throw you a party! On Saturday, November 5th, we will have fun activities for the whole community, including a chance to win a Nook Simple Touch (see entry rules below).

Community members are invited to participate in any of the following events:

  • Team Trivia contest for families and friends (covering the years 1996 and 2011), starting at 12 noon.
  • At 1:30 p.m. in our Teen area, artist Ariel Echevarria will be creating caricatures of teens right before your eyes.
  • At 2 p.m., jazz guitarist Jake Reichbart will be playing in our lovely Faust Area for our music fans.
  • Starting at 3 p.m., local dignitaries will speak about the importance of the library to the Westland community over these last 15 years.
  • From 3:30-4:30, we will have sign-up for entry into the Nook giveaway at our e-reader table (open to Westland library card owners in good standing). Also learn more about our upcoming e-book lending program in partnership with OverDrive here.
  • What better way to finish a party but with cupcakes? From 3:30-4:30, everyone is welcome to attend our reception, complete with those sweet, delectable treats from Le Cakery and coffee from our local Biggby Coffee, and more jazz guitar from Jake Reichbart.

All community members are invited to help us celebrate 15 years of serving you. No RSVP necessary.

In addition to all the fun events on November 5th, we are showing Academy Award-nominees from 1996 on Tuesday afternoons throughout November. Check our Events calendar and look for Afternoon Classics for more information.

Library Closed for Veterans Day

The library will be closed Friday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day.  The Friday night movie will be shown on Saturday, November 12 at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:30 p.m.)

Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday, November 6

Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour when you go to bed Saturday night!  You get an extra hour of sleep because Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 am on Sunday, November 6.
