The Westland Public Library is proud to host the NASA-sponsored Here. There. Everywhere. exhibit (http://hte.si.edu) in its Faust (fireplace) Area during the month of May. The exhibit includes 22 different banners, video footage, and an interactive display table showing how the laws of physics apply in our world, in our universe, and, as far as we know, everywhere. The exhibit is available for viewing during regular library hours. Please see the Events pages in our Children's, Teen, and Adult Departments for upcoming programs celebrating the exhibit. For more space and science-related videos, blogs, and activity guides, visit the Here. There. Everywhere. website.
Check out the extra promo for the library during Fox 2 Saturday morning news (click on link to view). We have a number of other MoneySmart Week programs coming up, including Retirement Planning, Making Sense of Mortgages, and Identity Theft (with Fox 2 segment star, Sgt. Jeffrey Kavanaugh). Thanks to everyone who's making this week of programs great.
We also are happy to say that we shredded over 7000 pounds of paper at our Community Shred today. Thanks to General Shredding for all their help.
Money Smart Week starts on Saturday, April 20th with a range of programs designed to help you better manage your personal finances. Saturday is our Kick-off date and we'll offer something for every age group, including a Budgeting for Kids, Dollar Bill Origami and Smart Money for Teens, and a Community Shred for adults. Check our Events pages (teen and childrens are separate) for more information on these events. For a complete listing of area events or to pick up a free Money Smart comic book, stop by the Reception Desk. To see a complete listing of other Money Smart Week events going on in Southeast Michigan, visit the Money Smart Week site.
Spring is here and the Westland Library is buzzing with great programs. Bring non-perishable food items in and receive up to $20 off your current fines during our April Food for Fines program. Speaking of money, we’re looking to save you some with our Money Smart Week programs from April 20th – April 25th. To celebrate National Poetry Month, our 4th Annual Westland Writes book is accepting submissions from April 1 – April 27 and we're holding a Book Title Poetry Contest during the same time period. Help us recognize and celebrate one of the diverse cultures of this region with our new Muslim Journeys Bookshelf. We have a Kick-off Event for the collection on April 13th and a concert on April 15th. All this in addition to our usual array of Computer Classes, Chess Clubs, Friday Movies, kids programs, books, music, movies, and computers. We look forward to seeing you.
The library will be closed Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31 for the Easter Holiday. The library will re-open at 9 am on Monday.
Turner Town is here! This amazing dollhouse exhibit was created in order to spread awareness of Turner Syndrome and Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities. Jennifer Wakenell, the creator of the exhibit, started this project as a Girl Scout, and it has grown to include many dollhouses and displays. The Westland Library will be hosting Turner Town for the month of March. Please stop by the Children's Dept. to see this fun and educational display. Don't forget to sign the visitor's log!
